Chris Drury can’t succumb to Rangers trade deadline seduction

We can tell you with utmost confidence in our well-placed, impeccable sources that the Rangers’ priority going into Friday’s 3 p.m. trade deadline is not to acquire a veteran right wing to fill the hole on the right beside Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad.

No Frank Vatrano, no Vlad Tarasenko, no Patrick Kane, no Jack Roslovic will be coming to save the day like Mighty Mouse. Indeed, this is shaping up to be The Opposites Deadline.

For after having traded pending rental properties Ryan Lindgren and Jimmy Vesey to Colorado for draft capital and roster players, GM Chris Drury on Thursday sent out the third and final pending free agent on the roster, Reilly Smith, to Vegas for San Jose’s third-rounder this year and AHL center Brendan Brisson, the 29th-overall selection of the 2020 draft.

Hours later, Drury sent that third-rounder to Vancouver for Carson Soucy, the 30-year-old, 6-foot-5, 210-pound physical defenseman who has another year remaining on his contract for a $3.25 million cap hit. This was no short-term move but one that contemplates next year, as well.
