EXCLUSIVE: A TV adaptation of Jennine Capó Crucet’s latest novel Say Hello To My Little Friend (Simon & Schuster, 2025) is in development at AMC Studios for AMC from Eva Longoria and Cris Abrego’s Hyphenate Media Group (Land of Women) and Gina Mingacci (Killing Eve), sources reveal to Deadline.
The dark comedy series will be written by Capó Crucet, who, we hear, has already written the pilot for the project which is described as Scarface meets Moby Dick. We understand the TV series will follow the novel’s storyline quite closely.
“Say hello to my little friend” is one of the most quotable lines in film history, spoken by Al Pacino while playing Tony Montana in Brian De Palma’s Scarface (1983). Oliver Stone, as the screenwriter of the Miami-set feature, is credited for writing the line.
The novel follows failed Pitbull impersonator Ismael Reyes—you can call him Izzy—who might not be the Scarface type, but why should that keep him from trying? Growing up in Miami has shaped him into someone who dreams of being the King of the 305, with the money, power, and respect he assumes comes with it. After finding himself at the mercy of a cease-and-desist letter from Pitbull’s legal team and living in his aunt’s garage, Izzy embarks on an absurd quest to turn himself into a modern-day Tony Montana.
Capó Crucet is one of Miami’s pre-eminent literary voices representing the second-generation Latino experience of not fully feeling like you’re from the United States where you were born, nor from the Latin American home of our parents. Her career launched in 2009 with the release of her book of short stories, How To Leave Hialeah, which received the Iowa Short Fiction Prize, the John Gardner Book Award, and the Devil’s Kitchen Reading Award.
Other titles include the New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice Make Your Home Among Strangers (St. Martin’s Press, 2015), My Time Among The Whites: Notes From An Unfinished Education (Picador, USA, 2019) and Fourteen Days: A Collaborative Novel (Harper, 2024), which she contributed to among many other notable authors. Capó Crucet is repped by Maria Massie at Massie McQuilkinn and Altman Literary Agents.
In addition to Say Hello to My Little Friend, Hyphenate Media Group is developing Confessions on the 7:45 at Hulu. In the unscripted space, they have been shooting Bienvenido A Necaxa, a spinoff of Welcome to Wrexham following a Mexican soccer team, and the CNN Original series Searching for Spain, premiering in April. Hyphenate Media Group is a media holding company and premium content studio that develops and produces its own slate of premium programming and invests in creator-led production companies.
Mingacci has produced multiple TV and film projects, including Austenland and the BBC’s hit Killing Eve, a British spy thriller starring Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer. She is currently collaborating with Jonathan Glatzer on AMC’s latest original series, the as yet untitled Silicon Valley project centered around a rift between a self-appointed “inventor of the future” tech CEO and his self-serving “performance psychologist”, who are engulfed in a scandal sparked by the exploitation of personal data.
