Mandatory evacuation orders for Trabuco Canyon fire

A wildfire in Trabuco Canyon near a remote-controlled aircraft field has exploded in size and prompted some mandatory evacuation orders Monday afternoon.

The Airport Fire has burned about 800 acres in Trabuco Canyon, a mountain community north of Rancho Santa Margarita in Orange County.

The Orange County Fire Authority responded to the fire at approximately 1:30 p.m. And a 7-acre fire was found burning in dry brush. Crews were attacking the blaze from the ground and air, using “hand crews, dozers, helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft,” officials said.

Since then, the fire has continued to grow, with fire officials announcing the latest acreage around 3:50 p.m.

Huge plumes of smoke could be seen across the area, and Sky5 video showed huge flames burning up a steep hillside.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department was asking residents living near the fire to monitor evacuation orders and be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice.
