Carlos Mendoza shares injury updates on Mets RHPs Kodai Senga, Paul Blackburn, Christian Scott.
Ahead of this weekend’s three-game series at the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday, manager Carlos Mendoza shared injury updates on right-handed pitchers Kodai Senga, Paul Blackburn and Christian Scott.
Kodai Senga
Senga (left calf strain) “is progressing well,” Mendoza said.
“But I don’t want to go too far,” Mendoza said. “We just have to stay here. He threw another bullpen today with the hitters standing.
“The next step will be the same at Citi Field, whether it’s Monday or Tuesday, where he will throw and face hitters.
“But I don’t want to go too far. But he’s progressing well, and we’ll see what we’ve got after that.”
SNY’s Andy Martino reported Thursday that Senga is still in play to return to the Mets for the Sept. 24-26 series at the Atlanta Braves.
“I’m going back to spring training and when you’re envisioning a six-man rotation and he’s going to go down and when we’ll probably bring him back and then we’ll bring him back,” Mendoza said. will bring and he will go down immediately.”
“So I think, look, when he’s healthy — man, when we saw him play (July 26) against the Braves, he was electric. But it’s hard for me to sit here and say, ‘Man. , if he’s healthy again,’ or, ‘Where do we see him?’
“I’ll have to wait and see before we can have that kind of conversation. I like where he’s at physically and hopefully he’s a factor for us.”
At the same time, Mendoza said, he believes Senga is preparing accordingly.
“I think so,” Mendoza said when asked if he had a feeling Senga thought he would be back this year. “I haven’t been around … but the reports that I’m getting, that we’re getting, yeah, that’s the feeling that we’ve got that — hopefully, we’ll get it here at some point.” . point before the end of the year.”
Senga began the season on the injured list with a right shoulder capsule strain and played only on July 26 against the Braves, allowing two runs on two hits (one homer) while striking out nine, walking one and Hit the other in 5.1 IP. strained his left calf.
“I think we’ll have to wait and see how we get there,” Mendoza said of Senga’s potential role, whether as a starter or in the bullpen. “The build — how many pitches he’s going to be able to give us on an outing, even though it’s a short outing, whatever we want to call it.
“Or is it too much to ask him to come out of the bullpen? His routine — there’s a lot here. We just have to wait and see where we’re at physically before we make a decision.”
Paul Blackburn
The Mets placed Blackburn (strained right hand) on the 15-day injured list on August 25, and he made his rehab start with Triple-A Syracuse on September 3. Blackburn was slated for his return, until a lower back problem kept him from starting the Sept. 9 series at the Toronto Blue Jays.
“We’re still waiting,” Mendoza said. “He’s going through a battery of tests. But one thing I can tell you is that it’s going to be a week-to-week (injury). I don’t think we’ll see him on the pitch for the next seven. -10 days, but he’s still going through some tests in New York.”
Christian Scott
The Mets placed Scott (sprained right UCL) on the 15-day injured list on July 23, but he is throwing and has a bullpen seat through the weekend.
“He’s throwing the bullpen on Sunday,” Mendoza said of Scott. “He continues to throw. We’ll see what we have.”
